The ever expanding Marvel brand
Marvel Entertainment has seen an amazing amount of growth recently with their hugely popular and successful ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ franchise of feature films. Marvel Comics has been around in it’s current form since the 1960s, and was initially founded as Timely Comics in 1939. Little did they know back then that Marvel would end up being a household name, and basically redefining what Hollywood sees as a success. Marvel is no newbie when it comes to bringing their comics to life, as arguably their most popular character Spider-Man was the star of his own series (starring Richard Hammond) in the 1970s. Sure it was cheesy, but not nearly as much as Adam West’s Batman. Unfortunately Marvel’s road to film making dominance had a few road bumps along the way, one of note is the 1994 Fantastic Four movie directed by Roger Corman. This Fantastic Four movie was created not to be released but to secure the copyright that was about to run out. Fortunately Marvel has overcome this slump and went on to create the incredibly successful movies such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Avengers. Not only do these movies mesh well together to form the core of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they also offer a launching point into their new TV series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which was created by Joss Whedon (Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and FireFly). Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had a relatively slow start, but with it’s tie in to the feature film Captain America: The Winter Soldier things have really picked up pace. Marvel hasn’t stopped at comics and movies though, it has expanded to cover everything from toys, clothes, games, even online casino games such as Iron Man 2 Pokies at MansionCasino.com Australia. Looking to the future there are several video games in the pipeline, and also a plethora of TV series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage which will lead up to the Defenders series, much like Captain America, Iron Man and Thor led up to Avengers. This new group of shows are planned to be released on NetFlix. Not to be left out 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures both have plans on creating their own shared universes with the properties they own. With 20th Century Fox owning the rights to X-Men and the Fantastic Four. The upcoming X-Men Days of Future Past is the sequel of sorts to X-Men First Class, and ties in with the original X-Men series. I’m not aware of anything about the Fantastic Four franchise other than rumors of a reboot. Personally I liked the Fantastic Four series of movies. Sony Pictures owns the rights to Spider-Man which they rebooted with The Amazing Spider-Man. Sony Pictures has already announced plans for other movies in the Spider-Man shared universe that involve Venom and The Sinister Six. Venom was already in the Spider-Man 3 movie, played by Topher Grace. In my opinion a Venom movie would be very interesting if handled correctly. Personally I found Sandman to be the star of Spider-Man 3, but as it was with X-Men 3, it was the weakest of the series.
